What Do You Really Want?

The Question That Changes Everything
Sunday Round Up - by John Powell
There’s a moment in Luke 11 where Jesus invites us to rethink prayer entirely. Not as a list of needs, not as a desperate scramble for solutions, but as a conversation rooted in faith rather than fear. So often our prayers become general, vague, or reactive simply because we don’t know how else to pray. Yet Jesus keeps drawing us back to one simple question:
“What do you want?”
He asked it to the blind man, even though the answer seemed obvious. He asks it of us too—not because He doesn’t know, but because He wants us to look beyond the surface. Beyond the healing. Beyond the problem. Beyond the stuff.
Faith or Fear: Where Are We Placing Our Trust?
When we pray from fear, we pray small. We pray according to what we can see. But Jesus calls us to pray from a different place—a place where faith asks for the outcome, not the obstacle. A place where we recognise that material things serve our happiness, but they are not the source of it.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The blessing is not in the stuff. The blessing is in the unseen realm—the kingdom realm—where love, joy, and peace flow freely.
God already knows what we need. He wants to know what we desire beyond the need.

The Water and Not the Cup
One of the most powerful pictures is this:
We pray for the cup, but the blessing is the water.
We ask for the container—money, houses, cars, opportunities—when God wants to pour out the water: joy, freedom, peace, clarity, love. You can have a cupboard full of cups and still have nothing to drink.
So ask yourself:
What do I want to feel in the years to come?
What do I want this blessing to be?
If God gave it, what would it feel like?
If it’s truly from God, there will be no struggle attached to it.
Praying Like Jesus Prayed
In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches us the Lord’s Prayer—not as a script to recite, but as a pattern of alignment. To get the results Jesus did, we must pray like He did. Not more words, but clearer vision.
Lead us not into temptation — keep me from distractions that pull me off the path.
Deliver us from the evil one — protect my direction and destination.
Don’t limit God.
Don’t try to be His little helper.
He has a vast supply for the ability, not the container.
Romans 14:17 reminds us that the kingdom is made of love, joy, and peace. When these fill your life, they attract blessing. They draw people. They shift atmospheres.
And deep down, isn’t that what we all want?
Peace and stability
Joy that strengthens
Love that anchors
God prepares the path to the destination—not the road. The road may twist, but the destination is secure.
Perfect Peace in the Process
Philippians 4:6–7 gives us the perfect illustration:
“Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
Be grateful for small beginnings. Honour the journey, but keep your eyes on the destination. Obey along the way, and don’t let distractions delay you.
And remember: You already have the victory. God knows what you need. Many prayers are already answered in Heaven.
So instead of asking for the thing, ask for the feeling Heaven wants to give you:
Need a car? Ask for joy and freedom to do more.
Want the mortgage gone? Ask for the peace and release that freedom brings.
Longing for marriage and family? Ask for love—not a specific person.
If you still feel in need, perhaps you’re asking for the wrong thing.
Heaven’s economy is simple: love, joy, and peace. Ask for these on Earth.
Your Authority, Your Identity, Your Inheritance
Your authority is seated with Christ in Heaven. In spirit, you are already there with Him—in unconditional love, in His joy, in His peace that surpasses understanding.
So don’t ask for a sign. You are the sign. You are His signature. His greatest work.
Smith Wigglesworth said, “I am not waiting on a move of God. I am a move of God.” Recognise the great work God has already done in you.
You are the signet ring of the King. So ask boldly:
Ask for Heaven on Earth.
Ask for the real thing—love, joy, and peace.
Ask for the destination, not the journey.
Lift your eyes beyond the material, beyond the circumstances, beyond the problems.
God already knows your needs.
The blessing is not the cup. It’s in the water!
