A Prophetic observation
Pastor John Powell
Bible Study – 10 March 2026
When Pastor John Powell sat down to teach on the “Tyranny of Freedom,” he began not with a scripture, but with an image—a recent news story of HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, stalled from deployment by layers of government red tape. What caught his attention was the enormous red dragon emblazoned on its hull, a rare and striking sight for a Royal Navy vessel. That image became a prophetic lens for the message that followed.

A Burning Bush in the Everyday
Just as Moses turned aside to look at a burning bush—something unusual breaking into the ordinary—John urged us to pay attention to the signs God places in our path.
HMS Dragon was one such sign: a vessel prepared for action yet held back and emblazoned with the Welsh dragon. A picture of the Welsh church and wider church community in this hour.
The Type 45 destroyer carries prophetic meaning:
45 meaning preparation, divine grace and divine judgment.
The ship’s delay symbolised:
• A government operating with subtle tyranny (meaning cruel and oppressive government or rule)
• A people caught unprepared
• Fear of public opinion
• A hesitancy to act when action is required
John referenced Keir Starmer’s recent comment, “Defend by attack,” calling it the mindset of a double‑minded man. In contrast, the church is called to take back its inheritance—not by aggression, but by the authority God has already given.
The Dragon as a Symbol of Resistance
The red dragon has long been a Welsh emblem of defiance against tyranny, invasion, and cultural oppression. Its origins are ancient and mysterious—older than the modern Welsh identity, older even than the medieval myths that tried to explain it.
John reminded us:
• The red dragon is not the dragon of Revelation 12
• The Welsh dragon originally had two feet and a long tail
• It represents guardianship, survival, and a refusal to be reshaped by outside forces
“Enjoy this land,” he said, “but don’t try to change it—or you’ll lose the very thing you came to love.” There is a welcome in the hillside but don’t go moving the furniture.
A prophetic warning for Wales, but also for the church: stand for what is right, or you will lose it.
The Real Battle: Prayer
Our warfare is not physical. It is fought in prayer, in dreams, in visions, in the quiet turning of our attention toward God.
12 Royal Navy ships have carried the name Dragon—a number that speaks of the government of God. John linked this to James 1:17: when we stand under God’s authority, there is no shadow. Step out from under it, and confusion enters.
The dragon, in this prophetic picture, represents:
• Alignment with God’s authority
• Clarity instead of confusion
• The prayer “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done” lived out
An earlier ship named HMS Ormonde was later renamed Dragon in 1711 which meant “spear protector” —a reminder that Christianity is not passive. It has teeth. It guards and advances at the same time.
Look to the One Lifted Up
John drew us to Numbers 21, where fiery serpents (the Hebrew word seraphim) struck the Israelites after they longed to return to Egypt. Moses lifted the bronze serpent, a foreshadowing of Christ, and all who looked were healed.
Judgment, John said, is coming to this generation—but those who keep their eyes on Christ will be protected, restored, and vindicated. Like Israel in Goshen, the people of God may be stalled, but they are safe.
When God Judges, He Moves Quickly
Pastor John drew a striking parallel from 2 Kings 2:23–24, where Elisha was mocked by a group of boys who jeered, “Go up in a whirlwind” Elisha cursed them, and a bear came out of the woods and attacked them. It is a sobering reminder that when God brings judgment, He does not hesitate.
The prophetic connection deepens when we learn that Ormonde—one of the ships later renamed Dragon—also means “mountain bear,” a symbol of angelic strength and swift justice.
John’s message was clear:
• Let God fight your battles
• Call out to Him rather than retaliating
• As Paul said, “Ask God to bless your enemies according to their works”
• God Himself removes the obstacle—the mountain moves
This is not a call to vengeance, but to trust. When God acts, He acts decisively.
Wales: A Gift to the Nations
Another ship once named Dragon was later renamed Fame. John used this to speak into Wales’ calling - not a nation sent to the nations, but a nation given to the nations.
He recalled the story of Robert Jermain Thomas, who was inspired by the 1904 revival in Wales, left for a missionary trip to Korea but only made it to the beach where he died. The 100s of Bibles he brought with him washed ashore after his ship was attacked and the soldier took home. Korean families used the pages as wallpaper—only later realising they were reading Scripture. Revival followed.
“He wasn’t sent,” John said. “He was given as a gift to the nations.”
So too with Wales:
• A unique voice and way of life
• A culture forged in resistance
• A spiritual heritage meant to bless the nations
Evan Roberts once prayed, “Bend me, save the world.” John reminded us that the bow must be willing to be bent so the arrow—the Word of God—can fly.
HMS Dragon: A Prophetic Picture
The ship’s delay became a metaphor for the church:
• In the stalling, God is preparing
• In worship, we receive heavenly ammunition (the ship was fitted at the Upper Ammunition Bay- Heaven)
• Revelation 8 shows our prayers becoming thunder and lightning and the Angel of the Lord throws them back to us—God’s judgments released on the earth
God is fitting His people for action. Look for prophetic insight everywhere. God is speaking, pushing through, aligning His government with His people.
The Dream
John shared a recent dream:
He travelled by bus along flooded roads until a man told him he could go no further until he went to the church. Inside a grand, traditional building, he felt unprepared—wearing only pyjamas. A choir sang Christmas carols in summer, symbolising believers speaking out of season.
He was asked to pray for a Brazilian ministry, but his prayer shifted to Cyprus and to oil—oil that would flow without ceasing. A sign, he said, that both natural and spiritual oil will begin to move, and the church must be ready.
The presence of God fell. John stepped aside to give God the glory, sitting on an uncomfortable pew—because sometimes blessing requires discomfort.
A famous Welsh woman sat beside him, masked. Her muffled voice represented Wales hiding behind costume, nostalgia, and a misunderstood identity. True identity is found in purpose, not performance.
The young woman who accompanied him jumped into a pond and emerged understanding. The next generation, John said, will immerse themselves fully in God’s presence. We must not judge their methods.
Only then did the man say, “You can continue your journey.”
Conclusion: Wales, Speak
Wales must speak loudly and clearly again.
Not in costume.
Not in nostalgia.
But in purpose.
This is a season to:
• Watch & Wake up
• Pray in the right season
• Move even when you don’t feel ready
• Stand under God’s authority and see preparation in the stalling
And watch the Mountains/Obstacles move.
